Volunteer Opportunities in Justice & Legal Services

The County of Sonoma offers services and programs in the areas of justice, law enforcement, and legal issues.  Volunteer opportunities in these areas are spread throughout a number of County departments and programs including County Counsel, the District Attorney’s Office, the Family Justice Center, Juvenile Hall, and the Sheriff’s Office.

These range from clerking in multiple areas of the law, assisting with the planning and implementation of events and outreach, providing administrative and clerical support, tutoring and mentoring incarcerated youth, organizing donations for victims of domestic violence, providing translation services, and acting as an extra set of eyes and ears in the Volunteers in Policing (VIP’s) with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

• Join the Sonoma County Civil Grand Jury

  Want to make a difference in Sonoma County? Consider serving on the county’s Civil Grand Jury, which plays an important role in investigating and reporting on local governmental operations to ensure they are being conducted efficiently, honestly and in the best interest of the public. It is also an opportunity to develop a better understanding about Sonoma County, its governmental structure and “who does what” in our communities.

  When the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors adopted a gold resolution proclaiming March as Civil Grand Jury Appreciation Month,  Supervisor David Rabbitt, vice chair of the Board of Supervisors said, “Grand juries help to highlight problems and inefficiencies in local government, and their recommendations improve the services that taxpayers expect. We are always in need of more dedicated community members to serve in this role.”  

  The Sonoma County Civil Grand Jury “the watchdog”, is made up of 19 volunteers who operate under the authority of the Sonoma County Superior Court. The results of Grand Jury investigations are contained in reports that lay out the findings of specific problems or issues and make recommendations for solutions. Each term begins in July and runs through the end of June.
