Robert Pittman, Sonoma County Counsel, announces retirement after 35 years of public service

August 27, 2025

After 35 years in public service, including the past 14 years with the County of Sonoma, County Counsel Robert Pittman has announced his retirement, effective January 2026.

Pittman has served as County Counsel since September 2020, guiding the Office of County Counsel through significant challenges and milestones. He began his career as a city planner in Artesia, California, before attending law school with the goal of becoming a public agency attorney.

Over the course of his legal career, he has represented more than 20 cities and several dozen special districts throughout California, earning a reputation for his deep knowledge of municipal and public agency law.

During his tenure as County Counsel, the office advised the Board of Supervisors and County departments on a wide range of complex legal matters, supported the County’s response to multiple natural disasters—including the COVID-19 pandemic—and advanced numerous legacy projects.

Pittman emphasized what a privilege it has been to work alongside the County’s elected leadership, fellow department heads, and the dedicated staff of the Office of County Counsel. He specifically touted the talent of his team.

“Our attorneys and staff are among the most talented, creative, and committed professionals in California,” he said. “It has been an honor to serve with them in supporting the County’s mission and the residents of our community.”

Reflecting on his career, Pittman stated: “I was drawn to public service because of the opportunity to give back to my community in a meaningful and lasting way. It has been a challenging but rewarding career path, and I take with me a treasure trove of memories. I leave with a contented heart and confidence in the commitment of the talented lawyers in the office to continue advancing the County’s mission.”

He expressed deep pride in the collective accomplishments of the Office of County Counsel and noted that, while stepping away is bittersweet, he looks forward to the next chapter and a quieter, gentler future with his family.

“On behalf of the Board, I want to express gratitude for Counsel Pittman’s lifelong dedication to public service. His commitment to the common good has shone through in his leadership role as County Counsel,” said Board Chair Lynda Hopkins. “He deeply loves the work — but maybe even more than the work, he loves the people who work with him in his office. Bob runs the largest law firm in Sonoma County. He has built a wonderful work culture and an expert, empowered team of attorneys to support the County’s needs. I know he’ll be missed not only by the Board, but by all who have had the opportunity to work with him.”

The County of Sonoma will soon begin the process of finding a successor to build on Pittman’s commitment to public service excellence.
