One Less Spark, One Less Wildfire

Did you know 95 percent of California wildfires are caused by human activity? Here are some tips to keep our communities safe this fire season:

  • Mow your lawn before 10 a.m. – keep a fire extinguisher or hose nearby and never mow if it’s windy.
  • Avoid using power tools that create sparks near dry vegetation.
  • Fully extinguish campfires – drown, stir, feel.
  • Keep grills away from dry vegetation.
  • Maintain vehicles to prevent sparks – secure all chains and remove dragging parts.
  • Follow local burn regulations and bans – plan, verify, apply.
  • Clear dry leaves and debris from your yard.

Free Wildfire Risk Assessments Now Underway

Beginning this week, local fire departments will be out in neighborhoods across Sonoma County offering curbside wildfire risk evaluations—at no cost to homeowners. Eligible areas include Lower Russian River – Guerneville, Larkfield-Wikiup – Mark West, Penngrove and Sonoma Mountain.

Trained wildfire mitigation specialists — working with Rancho Adobe Fire District and Sonoma County Fire District — will assess your home’s defensible space and home hardening from the street. Because the assessment can be done from the curb, you don’t need to be home.

If your property is assessed, you’ll receive a door hanger with a unique code to access your Preliminary Wildfire Risk Report online.

  • It’s free
  • It’s educational, not enforcement
  • It’s your chance to reduce risk before peak fire season
